Standards Info
All helmets must pass through rigorous safety standards and certifications before being deemed legal for road use. Helmets passing these tests will bear the Australian Standard, AS/NZS 1698, sticker.
Helmets that have not passed standards testing, and therefore do not have the Australian Standard sticker displayed, are illegal to wear for riding and are classed as “novelty” helmets. This also applies to helmets purchased overseas, that may be classed with international standards, but are not applicable in Australia.
Australian Standards testing is recognised internationally as a leader in the field. DOT & SNELL are international tests and certifications. DOT, the Department of Transport in America, do in house tests. SNELL testing is carried out independently by The Snell Memorial Foundation, which was established in 1957 for William Snell who died of a head trauma from a motorcycle accident. Both DOT & SNELL tests cover similar specifications as AS/NZS1698. These approvals are sometimes requirements of the scrutineers for certain sports where a helmet is part of the safety outfit to be won by competitors.
